There are a number of things a person with an anxiety disorder can do on their own, without formal therapy, to manage their anxiety effectively. Mr. Willis, can you tell us about some of these self-help techniques?

Yes, I can, Dr. Patel. It's important for those with anxiety to try to maintain good life balance. One strategy that can help is writing down worries and identifying what's in the person's control to do or change. Breaking down necessary tasks into smaller steps can make them feel less overwhelming.

Another strategy for maintaining life balance is to place a priority on self-care. Getting adequate sleep, a nutritious diet, and plenty of exercise are very important. People with anxiety should consider avoiding caffeine and some over-the-counter cold medications that can make anxiety symptoms worse. Other self-care practices to consider include intentional relaxation, guided meditation, or prayer.

Finally, it's important to spend time with loved ones who are supportive. Sharing problems and achievements with a trusted friend or family member can ease apprehension and build self-confidence.
