Dr. Jerman
For many people, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. Dr. Mansfield, can you tell us about some of the medications prescribed for ADHD?

Dr. Mansfield
Definitely, Dr. Jerman. The most common type of medication used for treating ADHD is called a stimulant. Stimulants work by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine, two brain chemicals that play important roles in thinking and attention.

While stimulant medications are generally safe to use under medical supervision, some people experience bothersome side effects. Parents or patients can discuss the risks and benefits of medication, including side effects, with their provider.

Providers may also prescribe a non-stimulant in combination with a stimulant to increase effectiveness.
